Archives: the 1940s

The 1940s saw a growth in the Hinsdale chapter, both in numbers and in activities.  By the end of the decade, there were a wide variety of interest groups:

  • Music Appreciation
  • Money Management
  • International Relations
  • Recent Grads (members graduated in past ten years)
  • Book Study Group
  • First Friday Book Group
  • Second Friday Book Group
  • Arts and Crafts
  • Creative Writing
  • Play Reading
  • Evening Book Study Group
  • Education Study Group
  • Novel Study Group

Other activities over the decade included building and riding in floats during the Hinsdale July 4 parades.

In 1947, the branch established the English Award, made to the senior girl at Hinsdale High School who makes the highest score on a standard objective test in English.  One of the members had been selecting the finalists for the annual DAR award when she noted that there were very few awards being offered to girls! It was clearly an opportunity for AAUW to serve, and a committee was immediately appointed to study the possibilities.  The result was that the branch began encouraging excellent young women (students) by presenting the AAUW ENGLISH AWARD at Senior Class Day each year.
